First face transplant performed on French woman

Thursday, December 1, 2005

Surgeons in France have performed a face transplant operation on a French woman who had lost her nose, lips and chin after being savaged by a dog. According to Iain Hutchison, an oral-facial surgeon at Barts and the London Hospital, the transplant is the first one to use skin from another person.

Doctors say the woman’s new face will be a “hybrid” between her donor’s face and her own face before the attack. In the five hour long operation, the donor’s tissues, muscles, arteries and veins were attached to the patient’s lower face. It is more favourable to use skin from another person’s face instead of skin from another part of the patient’s body, as the texture and colour of the skin are more likely to match.

A statement released by the hospital in Amiens said that the 38-year-old patient, who wishes to remain anonymous, has not been able to eat or speak properly since the attack in May this year. The woman was reportedly in “excellent general health” and her graft looked normal.

Ethical concerns, psychological impact, concerns relating to immunosuppression and consequences of technical failure have prevented teams from performing face transplant operations in the past, even though it has been technically possible to carry out such procedures for years.

Mr Hutchison warned of several problems with face transplants, such as blood vessels in the donated tissue clotting and immunosuppressants failing or increasing the patient’s risk of cancer. He also pointed out ethical issues with the fact that the procedure requires a “beating heart donor”. The transplant is carried out while the donor is brain dead, but still alive by use of a ventilator.

According to Stephen Wigmore, chair of British Transplantation Society’s ethics committee, it is unknown to what extent facial expressions will function in the long term. He said that it is not certain whether a patient could be left worse off in the case of a face transplant failing.

Mr Michael Earley, a member of the Royal College of Surgeon’s facial transplantation working party, commented that if successful, the transplant would be “a major breakthrough in facial reconstruction” and “a major step forward for the facially disfigured.”

3 Huge Benefits Of Outsourcing Property Management Services

By Alek Jones

Whether you own a small apartment or large premises, property management will be able to save you a fortune in expenses as well as stress. Despite the fact that many property owners think that they can handle all aspects of managing a property without the help of experts, it is all too often much more difficult than it appears, and to ensure effective management of resources, property owners need to be careful about hiring inept fly by night companies who are not equipped to manage properties. A recent news story about South African Police Commissioner Bheki Cele and his mismanaged team of property managers has brought home the importance of ethical and accountable management regardless of the size or nature of the property. The SAPS has come under a lot of fire for allegations of mismanaged funds, which are reportedly in the region of nearly R7 million.

While the SAPS answer to the powers that be on the use of the allocated funds, property owners can consider the following benefits of hiring a trusted company to manage their property effectively:

1.Residential properties are able to extend their life-span considerably

Residential apartments, especially those that date back to the 1970s and thereabouts, are able to stay maintained and well-kept with proper property maintenance and management. From simple things such as replacement of floors, taps or windows, to full renovation and restoration of older flats, properties are able to get a new lease on life, making them solid investments that will attract tenants year after year. With so many new apartments on the market, older apartments are often bypassed for trendier properties however with regular renovation and upkeep, older blocks are able to continue keeping up on the highly competitive property rentals market.

2.Disputes and other admin tasks are handled effectively

Property owners no longer have to deal with ongoing disputes about rent increases, leases and deposits, as management companies are able to deal with all admin and related issues on the owners behalf, from concerns about property development to any other issues that may arise. Many landlords have full-time jobs in addition to managing their property, and face endless problems dealing with tenants at all hours of the day something which eventually leads to service levels dropping as issues build up. A good indication of a reputable management company is the way that they handle disputes and the effectiveness of their operations. With the right management company, not only will property owners cut down on the amount of concerns that they need to deal with, but future disputes will be minimised with proper management solutions and services that are provided by the outsourced company.

3.Property experts will be able to save you on costs

Many landlords avoid hiring property management companies as they are concerned about forking out to pay for management services. In the long run however, these companies can actually help save costs with excellent contacts on repair services, and admin kept up to date, things run a lot more smoothly, minimising on wasted time and keeping costs down by carefully managing funds. Many management companies are also able to negotiate discounts with bulk wholesalers, to help you save even more on contracting costs and supplies for renovations.

For fuss-free operations and quality service, property management companies offer a highly beneficial way for property owners to manage their properties easily and simply.

Wikinews interviews former Salt Lake City mayor and 2012 presidential candidate Rocky Anderson

Wednesday, December 21, 2011

Former Salt Lake City mayor and human rights activist Rocky Anderson took some time to discuss his 2012 U.S. presidential campaign and the newly-created Justice Party with Wikinews reporter William S. Saturn.

Anderson served as mayor of Salt Lake City for eight years (2000–2008) as a member of the Democratic Party. During his tenure, he enacted proposals to reduce the city’s carbon emissions, reformed its criminal justice system, and positioned it as a leading sanctuary for refugees. After leaving office, Anderson grew critical of the Democratic Party’s failure to push for impeachment against President George W. Bush, and for not reversing policies on torture, taxes, and defense spending. He left the party earlier this year and announced that he would form a Third party.

Anderson officially established the Justice Party last week during a press conference in Washington D.C.. He proclaimed “We the people are powerful enough to end the perverse government-to-the-highest-bidder system sustained by the two dominant parties…We are here today for the sake of justice — social justice, environmental justice and economic justice.” The party promotes campaign finance reform and is attempting to appeal to the Occupy Wall Street movement. It is currently working on ballot access efforts, and will hold a Founding Convention in February 2012 in Salt Lake City.

Among other issues, Anderson discussed climate change, health care, education, and civil liberties. He detailed his successes as mayor of Salt Lake City, stressed the importance of executive experience, and expressed his views on President Barack Obama and some of the Republican Party presidential candidates. He spoke in depth about former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, with whom he worked during the 2002 Winter Olympics, and fellow Utahan, former governor and U.S. ambassador to China Jon Huntsman, Jr..

Long shots dashed hopes of favorites in Derby race

Monday, May 9, 2005

Saturday’s running of the Kentucky Derby left favorites in dry churned up dust, as speedster Spanish Chestnut forced an early pace that only long-shot horses fully answered. The two top finishers, Giacomo and Closing Argument ran past race favorites Bellamy Road and hopeful Bandini, who came off the starting gate well and into the first turn. But they faded under a blistering early pace that at the half-mile pole was second fastest in race history.

Only Afleet Alex, showing at third, applied salve to the wounded crowd of 154,000 ticket-tearing fans. Betting for this year’s race totaled a record $103.3 million counting both on- and off-track wagering. A 2 dollar wager on the winning horse Giacomo paid $102.60.

TV viewership in top metropolitan markets was down only slightly from the previous year, which considering the wagering shows no lack of interest in the race:

Win: Giacomo $102.60
Place: Closing Argument: $45.80
Show: Afleet Alex: $19.80

Norwegian government considers prosecuting Scientology

Sunday, May 31, 2009

The Norwegian Ministry of Health and Care Services is considering prosecuting and banning some Scientology practices, in particular the use of the Scientology personality test to sell courses. State Secretary Rigmor Aasrud said that the activities in question might be prosecuted as fraud or as violations of existing healthcare regulations. A Norwegian Member of Parliament (MP) whose daughter killed herself after taking such a test, supports the idea of prosecuting illegal practices rather than trying to ban the movement as a whole.

Also stupid or clearly false expressions must be allowed as free expressions in a democracy, as long as individuals are not harmed by the expressions. The questionable thing about the Scientology cult is, however, that their operation is harmful for individuals.

The statement was made after three journalists from the online edition of the newspaper Verdens Gang (VG) took the test. The journalists wore hidden recording devices, and did not disclose that they were journalists; VG put the recordings on its website. Scientology staff members told all three that they should buy a course to handle psychological issues. Two of the journalists filled out the 200 questions with honest answers, while the third gave answers consistent with being depressed. The “depressed” journalist was told that he should avoid traditional medicine, while one of the “normal” journalists was told that the course was her only hope for improvement unless she wanted to start taking “chemicals”.

Matthias Fosse, spokesperson for the Church of Scientology in Norway, said that the staff members in question were acting individually. He said that the Church of Scientology does not give medical advice, but that it encourages people to focus on the side effects of medications, and is critical of the “over-medication” of psychiatric patients.

Olav Gunnar Ballo, a Norwegian MP and medical doctor whose daughter Kaja suddenly killed herself after a negative experience with the Scientology test in France in March 2008, released a book about Kaja Ballo‘s life in April 2009. The book debuted on 2nd place in the Norwegian best seller list. Ballo listened to the recorded test result sessions from VG and said that he found the practice “horrible and harmful”. He told the newspaper Dagbladet that Norway could have something to learn from the current French prosecution of Scientology corporations and individuals, by prosecuting specific harmful practices rather than banning Scientology as a whole.

Matthias Fosse said that France is a far more secular society than Norway, and that France were going too far in their prosecution. He said that France has a list of 165 organizations considered to be “sects”, which not just included Scientology but also covered Baptists such as former U.S. president Bill Clinton. The list which Fosse referred to is a list from the 1995 Parliamentary Commission on Cults in France. Fosse said that the OSCE, the U.S. State Department and the UN had criticised French “violations of human rights”.

When Is Acid Reflux Dangerous Complications To Look Out For

By Kathryn Whittaker

It would be next to impossible to find anyone that has not had to deal with heartburn and the resulting pain at least once in their lifetime. For most people, this is something that happens on occasion, usually as a result of something we’ve eaten, and is not really anything to worry about. However, people who experience heartburn more than twice a week are diagnosed with GERD. This is when things might get serious. When is acid reflux dangerous? It becomes a problem when it is diagnosed as chronic, and nothing is done to reverse the damage and control acid production.

Heartburn can be just an occasional problem however, those who have pain constantly might be in more danger than they think they are at the time. The pain associated with this condition is due to acid leaking from the stomach and up into the esophagus. When that happens on a regular basis, the acid starts to corrode the soft tissues in the esophagus that are not meant to deal with that sort of invasion. Damage that is left unchecked and untreated can lead to some very serious complications over the course of a lifetime.

So, what are the common complications? When acid from the stomach is in contact with the tissues of the esophagus, damage will start to appear. This is called erosive esophagitis. These esophageal tissues are not built to deal with acid, and the damage can add up quickly. If left untreated, this can result in something called Barrett’s esophagus and also esophageal cancer.

Esophageal cancer is much like it sounds. This is cancer that happens in the esophagus. This type of cancer is hard to treat, and can often be fatal. There are other risk factors for this type of cancer as well, and those include smoking, drinking, and getting older. It is generally diagnosed in people over the age of 70 years. There are two types of cancer that effect the esophagus. Squamous cell carcinoma, which is cancer found in the upper and middle sections of the esophagus, and Adenocarcinoma, which is in the esophagus near the stomach.

Barrett’s Esophagus often occurs after someone has developed esophagitis. This is when the cells of the esophagus change abnormally. The cells change to fight off the invasion of acid in the area, and they start to resemble the cells found in the intestines. This condition can be diagnosed with an upper GI endoscopy, biopsy, and by symptoms. Treatment is limited and can involve the removal of the esophagus, which is usually only reserved for cancer patients. Barrett’s is sometimes a precursor to esophageal cancer. Each year about 0.5% of those with Barrett’s will go on to develop esophageal cancer.

For natural ways to treat and prevent acid reflux and GERD, keep reading and sign up for the free newsletter below.

There are other times to ask when is acid reflux dangerous. Though cancer and Barrett’s are often the most common problems that can arise, there are other complications that might happen. Some develop esophageal strictures. This is when the esophagus will slowly become smaller due to the build up of scar tissue and can result in difficulty swallowing. Cancer of the larynx is also a problem for some acid reflux sufferers. This is otherwise known as laryngeal cancer. Anyone with GERD that leaves it untreated is at risk for all of these conditions. This is why it is important to talk with a doctor about proper treatment. GERD can be managed, but it can also be dangerous. The best way to fight these conditions is through prevention.

Wikinews interviews Steve Burke, U.S. Democratic Party presidential candidate

Sunday, December 13, 2015

This article is a featured article. It is considered one of the best works of the Wikinews community. See Wikinews:Featured articles for more information.

Macomb, New York Councilman Steve Burke took some time to speak with Wikinews about his campaign for the U.S. Democratic Party’s 2016 presidential nomination.

Burke, an insurance adjuster and farmer, was elected councilman in Brookhaven, New York in 1979. He left the town after being accused and found not guilty of bribery in the 1980s. Since 1987 he has served as Macomb councilman off-and-on and currently holds the post. From 1993 to 1996 and 1999 to 2002 he worked as chairman of the Democratic Party of St. Lawrence County, New York. Among his many political campaigns, Burke unsuccessfully sought the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination in 1992 and recently attempted to run for U.S. Congress in 2014 but too many of his ballot petition signatures were found invalid. Burke filed with the Federal Election Commission to run for president in the 2016 election on September 18, 2015 and has qualified for the first-in-the-nation New Hampshire Primary.

With Wikinews reporter William S. Saturn?, Burke discusses his political background, his 2016 presidential campaign, and his policy proposals.
