Machine Learning is the most important field of artificial intelligence nowadays and it will soon be ubiquitously used where a reasonably large amount of data is available. For starters, Machine Learning is the use of algorithms that learn from data and make informed predictions and decisions without being explicitly programmed. It can be simply any data that belongs to the context of the desired use case.

Applications are already in everyday lives. The recommenders on Netflix, YouTube or Amazon that are able to determine correctly (at least often) what you want to view or buy. The home assistants like Amazon Echo or Google Home that can plan your day or play some slow music when youre emotionally down.

Dont expect quality insights out of poor data (aka garbage in, garbage out)

Machine Learning applications depend on the relevance and quality of the data that is analyzed by the algorithms. If the data is inaccurate or irrelevant, the predictions and decisions made will be off the mark:

If you access YouTube using your friends laptop, the recommendation will still give your friends playlist unless you sign in

In order to detect fraud, it is paramount that the historical data used is about correct transactions. If fraud data is the norm, the decision made will be incorrect

Think about a machine learning software that is used to provide the best possible pay for employees. Data showing some employees earning more than the CEO should be filtered out first

Dont expect something that isnt there

For successful operation of a Machine Learning application, the dataset has to be huge enough to make any kind of intelligent prediction. For instance, in home assistant software, the data collected in one week may not provide enough characteristics of the user to provide decisions. The assistant has to learn over several months to understand the repetitive patterns of the user and use that knowledge to predict what the user might need in the coming days.

Another limitation of Machine Learning is that it can only make predictions based on the available data. It can never make up something that the data have not alluded. In a smart program advising farmers on the most convenient crops to plant in a certain area, the program cannot provide any conclusive prediction if the historical data of the climatic conditions and soil type is unavailable.

Dont expect there will be no hard work

Building a quality machine learning application is generally a complex task but there is one aspect that is the most underestimated: Data preparation. Data may be presented in various forms. Some may be structured (like databases or Excel sheets). Other forms may be more or less unstructured (like logfiles, documents or images).

Necessary tasks are e.g. formatting, cleaning and sampling. In formatting, the available data is converted into the required format. The data might be required in a single flat file while the available data may be in several database tables. Or date fields might be in MM/DD/YY format but you need the day of week. Cleaning involves fixing of missing data and removal of redundant and unrelated data. Sampling involves using a small subset of a large amount of data because running the algorithms over the whole dataset is uneconomical and might take a lot of time.

Expect tangible results (if everything is done right)

In a business setup, the use of Machine Learning in various aspects can provide a huge boost:

Management can use data to predict the expected rate of growth in the coming months, e.g. to increase inventories or staff

The finance department can employ Machine Learning techniques to track the number of sales and spot anomalies

The marketing department can use campaign results data to fine-tune their segmentation and generate the next best offer for a client

How To Choose What Type And Size Of Snowboard To Ride

Submitted by: Karen Mae Cordon

If you are serious about taking your love for snowboarding into an even higher level, then you have to consider familiarizing yourself with the different types and sizes of snowboards so you will have an easier time choosing the best one for you. You have to become familiar about the different snowboards that are now introduced to the public to ensure that you pick one that perfectly suits you.

When it comes to selecting the best snowboard for you, you should consider defining yourself as a snowboarder by figuring out the specific kind of riding that you execute the most. It is also advisable for you to perform a comprehensive research about the different types of snowboards and their individual functions so you will know exactly which among them can work favorably for you.

One of the most popular types of snowboard is the all-mountain board. This is ideal for you if you are planning to play the sport anywhere in the mountains, backcountry, park, groomed runs and pipe. You can pick the directional board which you can ride downhill or the twin tip which you can ride in either direction. This board is also versatile so it is no longer surprising why it is chosen by novice riders who are still trying to master their preferred terrain.

Another popular type is the freestyle snowboard which has received extreme popularity because of its lightweight, short, and flexible nature. You can expect this option to excel in your attempt to properly grind rails, jib boxes or hit spins and tricks. You can also find versions of the freestyle board with heavy duty bases and edges and these are extremely useful for you in your attempt to easily absorb the beating from tree trunks and rails. The freestyle option is also ideal for you if you want to push your limits especially in riding terrain parks.

You can also choose the split board. This snowboard is split in half to allow you to easily climb on backcountry slopes that are not yet tracked. If you want to ride downhill, then rest assured that you can easily reattach the halves. Its design is perfect for you if you are an adventurous snowboarder who has enough skills, confidence and knowledge, especially in safely exploring unpatrolled backcountry slopes.

Powder snowboards are also available in the market and these are suitable for you if you want to spend most of your time in fluffy and deep snow which you can find in backcountry bowls. What make this board impressive are its wider noses and waists and wider upturned tails and tips that work in keeping its edges from sinking or catching. Note, however, that you cannot expect it to perform excellently in parks and groomed slopes.

Aside from gathering information about the different types of snowboards, you also need to familiarize yourself about those factors that can help you in choosing the best size of board for you. One of these factors is the level of your snowboarding ability. Be aware that the different sizes of snowboards are capable of addressing the needs and ability level of riders differently.

It is also important for you to note that the shape, construction, design, materials, length, flex and the intended use of the board are extremely useful in crafting a size which is perfect for your ability level. You have to make sure that you realistically assess your own skills and ability in this sport since this can help you in picking the right snowboard size for you.

Other factors that you need to consider when determining the perfect size of snowboard for you are the width, length, your favorite terrain and your specific riding style. By collecting accurate information about the different types of snowboards that are now available in the market and the different factors that can affect your decision when it comes to choosing the right size for you, you will have an easier time narrowing down all your available options.
