Colleges offering admission to displaced New Orleans students/LA-ND

See the discussion page for instructions on adding schools to this list and for an alphabetically arranged listing of schools.

Due to the damage by Hurricane Katrina and subsequent flooding, a number of colleges and universities in the New Orleans metropolitan area will not be able to hold classes for the fall 2005 semester. It is estimated that 75,000 to 100,000 students have been displaced. [1]. In response, institutions across the United States and Canada are offering late registration for displaced students so that their academic progress is not unduly delayed. Some are offering free or reduced admission to displaced students. At some universities, especially state universities, this offer is limited to residents of the area.

TV show Firefly’s “Serenity” movie trailer released, could spoil enjoyment for fans

Tuesday, April 26, 2005

The trailer for Joss Whedon’s new feature film, Serenity, is expected to be released today (Tuesday, April 26). Joss Whedon, the creator of such prime time television successes as Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, is promoting his latest movie with the official Serenity movie web site and a formal announcement. Joss Whedon has also warned fans of the Firefly show to avoid viewing the trailer, as it may be a spoiler for the movie, and may ruin their enjoyment.

This popular television writer and creator developed Serenity as a follow up to Firefly, a genre defining Sci-FiWestern that has received critical acclaim among science fiction enthusiasts, but failed to capture the interest of the typical prime time viewer. Firefly debuted on the FOX network in September, 2002, but was quickly canceled after one season.

Serenity uses many of the same lead actors and characters as the original television series. In an interview with Firefly actor Alan Tudyk, Serenity is the first film in a three-picture Firefly contract with Universal Studios.

Preserving Your Scrapbook Albums}

Submitted by: Dee Marie

You can easily spend many, many hours creating your family heirloom scrapbooks. The last thing you want is for damage to occur in storage. How can you best take care of your precious scrapbooks?

The first thing is to start right. If you’re a seasoned scrapper, you may already know these things, and beginners definitely want to start out right. When creating your scrapbook, do not use any materials that contain acid. This means that all scrapbooking papers and pens should be made of acid-free materials. Most products specifically designed for scrapbooking will state this on the label. Papers should also be acid free as well as lignin free. Lignin is a woody fiber that binds paper together, but it can also lead to deterioration. Finally, look for materials that are PVC free. PVC stands for polyvinyl chloride, and it can damage photographs. Look for products that are made from polypropylene or are labeled PVC free. Again, most scrapbooking suppliers only stock materials that are PVC free.

When your scrapbook is complete, look for an acid free storage container in which to store your album. Many craft suppliers carry these products, and they do not cost much. Use PVC free page protectors to protect the pages from viewers. You can also line acid-free paper in between the pages, which is not as protective as page protectors, but may be easier for certain pages that have three-dimensional aspects, such as certain embellishments or other memorabilia.

Store your scrapbook in an upright position, as this will help keep the pages from warping and will prevent against pages pushing into one another and creating indents. Keep your scrapbook out of direct sunlight, as this can cause photos to fade. When not in use, return your scrapbook to its acid free storage box and keep in a safe, cool place. You and your family will enjoy the scrapbook for years to come.

Australian cheerleaders told to cover up

Sunday, April 16, 2006

Australian cheerleaders have been told today to cover up their midriffs under calls by Gymnastics Australia, as they believe it encourages girls to be self-conscious.

Nerine Cooper, head of Gymnastics Australia, told the Sunday Telegraph, “We don’t want girls to feel under pressure to lose weight because of uniforms.”

Lisa Ince, head of Sydney Professional Dancers, disagreed. “It’s ridiculous really, if the thinking is that a midriff is offensive, then every dance school and athletics club would face the same restrictions,” she said.

The ban will affect about 150 teams registered with Gymnastics Australia.

Baking Bread At Home Using Sour Dough Recipes

By Guido Nussbaum

Sour dough is not something you make in a hurry. Not the first time anyway. The starter takes at least 24 hours to get ready, but some people would say one week or more. But don’t panic. Most of that time it is doing its own thing.

Originally bread was flat. Then long, long ago someone left a bowl of dough exposed and some wild yeast got in. There are still those who believe that this is the only authentic way to make sourdough, but most of us will want to bought yeast.

Alaskan Sour Dough Starter

You will need

1 packet of instant yeast

1 tablespoon vinegar

2 1/4 cups hand warm water

1 teaspoon salt

2 tablespoons sugar

2 cups strong bread flour

Dissolve the yeast in 1/4 cup of the warm water. Add sugar vinegar, salt and flour. Add the rest of the water and stir. Place in a non metallic bowl, cover and let it sit until it starts to ferment. About 3 days for a fairly sour taste, but you can use it after 24 hours. Stir again until and measure out the amount you need for your recipe. Bring this to room temperature before using. You then need to replenish the starter with equal volumes of flour and water.

Sourdough Bread

1 cup of starter

1 1/3 cups of hand warm water.

About 6 cups of flour. This can be any ratio you like of white and wholemeal strong bread flour.

1 dessert spoon of salt and the same of sugar.

A little cornmeal or semolina to sprinkle on pan.

Method

Pour 1 cup of starter into a large bowl. Add to this the warm water and about 3 cups of the flour. Mix well and then cover and leave for at least 2 hours in a warm place. You could also leave it in a cooler place for up to 24 hours. Mix the salt and sugar into 2 cups of the flour and mix this into the yeast mixture. Now turn it out onto a floured board and knead. Add more flour until you have a fairly stiff dough. Grease bowl. Place the dough back in the bowl, turning so that dough is coated with grease. Cover and let it rise. Knock down the dough and shape it into two large loaves or into rolls. Sprinkle tins or baking sheets with cornmeal or semolina, place loaves an d then let rise for further 2 hours. Preheat oven to hot, gas mark 8, 450F, 230C. and boil some hot water. Just before baking slash tops of loaves and brush with cold water. Place in oven. On the bottom of the oven place a dish with 3 cups of boiling water to create a steamy atmosphere. Close oven and bake for 25 minutes or so.

Tips

Check loaves are done by tapping bottoms. They should sound hollow.

Different glazes will produce different effects – try milk, beaten egg or salt water.

You could try sprinkling your dough with chopped herbs, sesame seeds, poppy seeds, caraway, coriander, pumpkin seeds and so on. More elaborate finishes could include onion rings or grated cheese. If the bread is well colored, but still sounds dull, try placing back in oven for 10 minutes with heat turned off.

Yes, it is a complicated process, but most of the time you are free to do something else. One of the busiest surgeons I know bakes bread like this every week as a total relaxation, so if he has time what excuse have the rest of us got.

President Obama renews his push to close Guantanamo detention facility

Friday, May 3, 2013

With over 100 Guantanamo Bay detainees in a hunger strike against their incarceration, President Barack Obama, on Tuesday, renewed his push for the closure of the facility.

President Obama addressed a news conference at the White House on Tuesday saying he would have a team of officials review the issue before again appealing to Congress to close the prison holding “terror” suspects in Cuba. “I think it is critical for us to understand that Guantanamo is not necessary to keep America safe,” he said. “It is expensive. It is inefficient. It hurts us in terms of our international standing. It lessens co-operation with our allies on counter-terrorism efforts. It is a recruitment tool for extremists. It needs to be closed.”

These remarks were made after 40 US Navy medical staff were sent to the facility to deal with the growing hunger strike that began on February 6 this year, where twenty one inmates are now being force fed; five of those are in hospital. “I don’t want these individuals to die,” President Obama said.

Calls by the Center for Constitutional Rights however, have called for President Obama to transfer men from the facility now; a power he has over Congress. “He should use the certification/waiver process created by Congress to transfer detainees, starting with the 86 men who have been cleared for release,” the New York-based group said.

When asked for greater details about President Obama’s intentions, National Security Council spokeswoman Caitlin Hayden said the president was “considering a range of options for ways that we can reduce the population there,” including “reappointing a senior official at the State Department to renew our focus on repatriating or transferring” lower-risk detainees.

Iraqi based war video game pulled by publisher

Wednesday, April 29, 2009

The game publisher Konami stated today in a Japanese newspaper that they will not be releasing the game Six Days in Fallujah. The game is based on the Second Battle of Fallujah, a vicious battle between American and Iraqi forces.

“After seeing the reaction to the video game in the United States and hearing opinions sent through phone calls and e-mail, we decided several days ago not to sell it,” Tokyo based Konami told the newspaper. “We had intended to convey the reality of the battles to players so that they could feel what it was like to be there.”

The developer of the game, Atomic Games, received controversial feedback from families of dead soldiers stating the game’s concept as “exploitative and distasteful”, as paraphrased by the The Wall Street Journal.

That paper also quoted a woman whose son had died in the Iraq war, who said “These people who aren’t affected by the war get to sit on their couch and play this ‘fun’ game.”

Video game developer Atomic Games has not yet stated a reaction to Konami’s announcement.

Over The Tops: High Top Sneakers

byAlma Abell

One of the familiar types of athletic shoes that come in and out of vogue is the high top. High top sneakers have an allure that appeals to athletes and fashionistas alike. Worn by musicians, street performers, movie personalities and the average American, high tops are a sneaker with their roots firmly in sports. Yet, before discussing its history, it’s important to understand what this shoe actually is.

What are High Tops?

High tops are athletic shoes that do not end at the ankle. Instead, they exhibit a cut that extends some distance beyond it. As a result, the collar of the shoe affords some protection to the ankle. Its intent is to provide some stability, particularly during an activity such as basketball or skateboarding.

High Top Sneakers often feature padded tongue as well as high lacing. This increases the support while giving these casual sneakers a distinctive look. The colors and material have changed from plain black and white canvas to more vibrant blues, bright reds, shocking pinks and even camouflage often executed in rubber, suede, leather and a variety of fabrics.

A Brief History of High Tops

Basketball claims the high top as its own. While there is some dispute, the first high top appeared in 1921. Its creator was the then Converse Rubber Shoe Company, but its reason for fame was an American basketball player, Chuck Taylor. He was a member of the Converse All Stars. Taylor wore the shoes in basketball games and used them in his basketball clinics in high schools throughout the country.

During his time with Converse, he not only sold the shoes, he improved them. Converse recognized his contributions during the 1930s. His signature became an integral part of the design. The shoes quickly became known as “Chucks.”

The high top sneaker became the basketball shoe. The favorite of many basketball stars, even during the 1980s and 1990s. Today, they are around in classic and unique form. No longer ruling the world of basketball, they nevertheless have found popularity on the street. Since their inception, these athletic shoes have found their way into the main stream. There are now a part of the line-up of many brand name sneakers manufacturers.
