Triple limb-reattachment fails – boy loses foot

Tuesday, April 5, 2005Terry Vo, the 10-year old Australian boy who had two hands and a foot reattached by surgeons after losing them in an accident, has had to have the foot re-amputated. He will be given a prosthetic foot in its place.

The operation to re-attach three limbs was thought to have been a first – but was ultimately unsuccessful, with the foot having died inside, and receiving insufficient blood supply following the surgery to reattach it.

“That would lead to the small muscles in the foot actually constricting, the toes bending over and a deformed …. foot that is sort of clawed over and doesn’t have good sensation,” said plastic surgeon, Mr Robert Love today, on Australia’s ABC Radio.

“Even if you can get all of that to survive, he [would be] worse off than having had an amputation.”

“What is very disappointing is that for the first two days after [the operation] the foot looked absolutely magnificent,” he said.

Terry’s hands were healing well, said the surgeon. The prosthetic foot would allow him to walk normally, since his knee was intact.

Chinese premier Wen Jiabao visits Shakespeare’s birthplace

Monday, June 27, 2011

Chinese premier Wen Jiabao paid a visit to the birthplace of English playwright and poet William Shakespeare on Sunday. The visit to Stratford-upon-Avon was included in his three-day tour of various industries in Britain. The UK is one of China’s biggest trading partners, second only to the EU.

[Stratford-upon-Avon] has produced a figure who belongs not only to the UK but to the world. A great man who belongs not just to his era but to entire history.

The 68-year-old Wen, reportedly a fan of Shakespeare, was met upon his arrival at Stratford-upon-Avon by dozens of flag-waving individuals from the UK’s Chinese community. He visited Shakespeare’s birthplace, which is now a museum and then attended a scene from Shakespeare’s “Hamlet”, his favourite play, while sitting in the “sun-drenched” garden. He toured the collection of treasures at the town’s Shakespeare Birthplace Trust. On his tour at the Trust, lasting half an hour longer than planned, he looked through a 17th-century folio of Shakespeare’s famous plays. Trust director Diana Owen, who talked with Wen during his informal tour, said Wen described Shakespeare as “the greatest writer of all time.”

Wen told Sky News that his love of Shakespeare began as a child.

“The local people here have every reason to take pride that this place has produced a figure who belongs not only to the UK but to the world,” Mr Wen said to Sky News. “A great man who belongs not just to his era but to entire history.”

The Chinese leader’s arrival in England came days after the announcement of activist and dissident sculptor Ai Weiwei’s release by Beijing last Wednesday, after a global call for his release. The announcement, made before Wen’s meeting today with British Prime Minister David Cameron, was likely discussed along with the issue of China’s record on human rights and trade deals. There were several protesters outside Downing Street, who held a banner that read “Cameron and Wen: human rights before trade”.

The goal of the visit, part of a three-nation tour of Europe, is the strengthening of economic ties between the two countries. China is increasingly outsourcing its own manufacturing to less costly labour markets and wants to increase its investments in established European brands. Today, China and Britain announced contracts worth over one billion pounds.

I am hoping that a billion Chinese might see some pictures on their TV of their premier coming and visiting the birthplace of Shakespeare, and thinking: ‘Well, I’d like to go there as well.’

British Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt, whose wife is Chinese, was hopeful that Wen’s visit would have a positive effect on the country’s tourism industry. He told Sky News, “I am hoping that a billion Chinese might see some pictures on their TV of their premier coming and visiting the birthplace of Shakespeare, and thinking: ‘Well, I’d like to go there as well.’ ” Hunt noted that 150,000 Chinese visit the UK yearly and thinks that is “the tip of the iceberg”.

Hunt stressed that Wen’s visit is not only about jobs. It is also about developing broader cultural ties “which is the best possible way to make sure we understand each other and avoid the kind of misunderstanding that so can bedevil relationships, as has happened in the past,” he told the BBC.

The Chinese are interested in British happenings. About 30 million Chinese watched the recent Royal wedding.

Beds In A Bag Make You An Instant Bedroom Designing Pro!

By Pat Bowlin

If you feel bedroom-designing challenged like I am, then bed in a bag sets may just be perfect for you! Everything you need comes in one complete set, and is designed to match or coordinate perfectly.

With no guess work, your bedroom will come out looking just like those in the finest home design magazines and at a price you can afford.

If you stick with the better designer brands names like Lawrence, Burlington House, Dan River, and Croscill you’ll find the attention to detail, fabrics and quality to be superior.

They’ll typically feature higher thread counts of 200 or more, which will provide the best combination of luxury and durability.

Another example would be a simple matter of the elastic that comes on fitted sheets. The better ones will have elastic all the way around the edges, not just on two sides. This insures that your sheet won’t pop off the corner of the bed while you’re sleeping. I personally hate waking up tangled-up like that! lol

To be sure what’s included in your bed bag, check your descriptive list carefully.

Most of the basics in bed bag sets will include: comforter, flat and fitted sheets, bed skirt, pillowcase (s)

Many of the better sets will also offer optional matching drapes, area rugs, accent tables, lamps and other important accessories like accent pillows. You’ll be amazed at how much detail and flair a few of these lush little decorative pillows can add to your bedroom!

You’ll be able to select a complete ensemble that will deck out your entire bedroom from floor to ceiling with matching accessories.

You’ll know these sets will match your taste to a Capital-“T”, whether that means Traditional, Tasteful or Trendy!

Bedding in a bag sets are affordable and often cost much less than purchasing the items ala carte. The best part is you know that even the wildest, boldest colors, prints, patterns and fabrics for your bedding and accessories, will be designed to match and coordinate just perfectly. Get that home design magazine look the easy way!

If you’re like many and simply insist on 5 or 6 pillow cases, you won’t find that many in most bed bags. Don’t worry. You can add coordinating solid pillow cases easily enough. Maybe with piping and extra detailing that matches the overall color scheme. Some of the best bed bag sets will actually have optional matching pillow cases available.

Let’s look at just two popular, quality bedding sets. There are hundreds of bed bag sets to select from, so let your creative juices flow!

Dan River always designs quality bedding whether you choose separate items or bed in a bags. The Monument Springs set is one example. Using earth tones to create a natural look, this set features a faux suede comforter in tan, brown, beige and chocolate with a large patchwork look.

Nothing’s quilt-like about these large patches of near-suede material, they look and feel like the real thing…but without the problems of cowhide which feels so heavy and will become shiny with use. This suede-like fabric will last for years and has a light-weight feel and soft, cuddly texture.

Solid light neutral tone sheets and pillow shams in 210 thread count provide lasting night time comfort. A 100% polyester bed skirt in a solid brown earth tone completes this set to perfection. Of course, you’ll want to dry clean the comforter and bed skirt. The sheets and pillow shams are machine washable. Beautiful enough for the most elegant bedroom, this easy to love bag bed set is just unique and easy to live in.

Burlington House Luxury Bed in a Bag Set in their Tuscany design is a fabulous set in shades of greens and ivory. The set includes 220 thread count cotton sheets and pillowcases. The top sheet is edged in a beautiful, small floral pattern which creates the perfect accent. It’s got a center of ivory highlighted with the small floral pattern around the edges which matches the flat sheet perfectly.

The drop section of the comforter is olive green and the color scheme is perfect for blending into a room featuring natural, earth colors. The comforter needs to be dry cleaned along with the bed skirt. The sheets and pillow cases are machine washable.

Complete your look with the matching drapes, area rugs, tables, lamps and various shaped decorative accent pillows, and you’ll be proud and amazed at how easy it was to pull your bedroom decor together!

You’ll love having fun selecting the different bedroom looks you can create from bedding in a bag sets like this. You could even switch themes from bright, cheery florals for spring and summer, to more traditional tones for fall and winter- why keep the same look all year round..?

No one but you will know that you didn’t call in a professional home designer to help you decorate the perfect bedroom. You’ll love the selection of fabrics, the textures, colors and patterns- and the coordinated look you’ll get when you choose top quality bedding that comes in sets like this. Simply smile when your friends compliment you on your home decorating skills!

Colleges offering admission to displaced New Orleans students/LA-ND

See the discussion page for instructions on adding schools to this list and for an alphabetically arranged listing of schools.

Due to the damage by Hurricane Katrina and subsequent flooding, a number of colleges and universities in the New Orleans metropolitan area will not be able to hold classes for the fall 2005 semester. It is estimated that 75,000 to 100,000 students have been displaced. [1]. In response, institutions across the United States and Canada are offering late registration for displaced students so that their academic progress is not unduly delayed. Some are offering free or reduced admission to displaced students. At some universities, especially state universities, this offer is limited to residents of the area.

TV show Firefly’s “Serenity” movie trailer released, could spoil enjoyment for fans

Tuesday, April 26, 2005

The trailer for Joss Whedon’s new feature film, Serenity, is expected to be released today (Tuesday, April 26). Joss Whedon, the creator of such prime time television successes as Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, is promoting his latest movie with the official Serenity movie web site and a formal announcement. Joss Whedon has also warned fans of the Firefly show to avoid viewing the trailer, as it may be a spoiler for the movie, and may ruin their enjoyment.

This popular television writer and creator developed Serenity as a follow up to Firefly, a genre defining Sci-FiWestern that has received critical acclaim among science fiction enthusiasts, but failed to capture the interest of the typical prime time viewer. Firefly debuted on the FOX network in September, 2002, but was quickly canceled after one season.

Serenity uses many of the same lead actors and characters as the original television series. In an interview with Firefly actor Alan Tudyk, Serenity is the first film in a three-picture Firefly contract with Universal Studios.

Preserving Your Scrapbook Albums}

Submitted by: Dee Marie

You can easily spend many, many hours creating your family heirloom scrapbooks. The last thing you want is for damage to occur in storage. How can you best take care of your precious scrapbooks?

The first thing is to start right. If you’re a seasoned scrapper, you may already know these things, and beginners definitely want to start out right. When creating your scrapbook, do not use any materials that contain acid. This means that all scrapbooking papers and pens should be made of acid-free materials. Most products specifically designed for scrapbooking will state this on the label. Papers should also be acid free as well as lignin free. Lignin is a woody fiber that binds paper together, but it can also lead to deterioration. Finally, look for materials that are PVC free. PVC stands for polyvinyl chloride, and it can damage photographs. Look for products that are made from polypropylene or are labeled PVC free. Again, most scrapbooking suppliers only stock materials that are PVC free.

When your scrapbook is complete, look for an acid free storage container in which to store your album. Many craft suppliers carry these products, and they do not cost much. Use PVC free page protectors to protect the pages from viewers. You can also line acid-free paper in between the pages, which is not as protective as page protectors, but may be easier for certain pages that have three-dimensional aspects, such as certain embellishments or other memorabilia.

Store your scrapbook in an upright position, as this will help keep the pages from warping and will prevent against pages pushing into one another and creating indents. Keep your scrapbook out of direct sunlight, as this can cause photos to fade. When not in use, return your scrapbook to its acid free storage box and keep in a safe, cool place. You and your family will enjoy the scrapbook for years to come.

Australian cheerleaders told to cover up

Sunday, April 16, 2006

Australian cheerleaders have been told today to cover up their midriffs under calls by Gymnastics Australia, as they believe it encourages girls to be self-conscious.

Nerine Cooper, head of Gymnastics Australia, told the Sunday Telegraph, “We don’t want girls to feel under pressure to lose weight because of uniforms.”

Lisa Ince, head of Sydney Professional Dancers, disagreed. “It’s ridiculous really, if the thinking is that a midriff is offensive, then every dance school and athletics club would face the same restrictions,” she said.

The ban will affect about 150 teams registered with Gymnastics Australia.

Baking Bread At Home Using Sour Dough Recipes

By Guido Nussbaum

Sour dough is not something you make in a hurry. Not the first time anyway. The starter takes at least 24 hours to get ready, but some people would say one week or more. But don’t panic. Most of that time it is doing its own thing.

Originally bread was flat. Then long, long ago someone left a bowl of dough exposed and some wild yeast got in. There are still those who believe that this is the only authentic way to make sourdough, but most of us will want to bought yeast.

Alaskan Sour Dough Starter

You will need

1 packet of instant yeast

1 tablespoon vinegar

2 1/4 cups hand warm water

1 teaspoon salt

2 tablespoons sugar

2 cups strong bread flour

Dissolve the yeast in 1/4 cup of the warm water. Add sugar vinegar, salt and flour. Add the rest of the water and stir. Place in a non metallic bowl, cover and let it sit until it starts to ferment. About 3 days for a fairly sour taste, but you can use it after 24 hours. Stir again until and measure out the amount you need for your recipe. Bring this to room temperature before using. You then need to replenish the starter with equal volumes of flour and water.

Sourdough Bread

1 cup of starter

1 1/3 cups of hand warm water.

About 6 cups of flour. This can be any ratio you like of white and wholemeal strong bread flour.

1 dessert spoon of salt and the same of sugar.

A little cornmeal or semolina to sprinkle on pan.

Method

Pour 1 cup of starter into a large bowl. Add to this the warm water and about 3 cups of the flour. Mix well and then cover and leave for at least 2 hours in a warm place. You could also leave it in a cooler place for up to 24 hours. Mix the salt and sugar into 2 cups of the flour and mix this into the yeast mixture. Now turn it out onto a floured board and knead. Add more flour until you have a fairly stiff dough. Grease bowl. Place the dough back in the bowl, turning so that dough is coated with grease. Cover and let it rise. Knock down the dough and shape it into two large loaves or into rolls. Sprinkle tins or baking sheets with cornmeal or semolina, place loaves an d then let rise for further 2 hours. Preheat oven to hot, gas mark 8, 450F, 230C. and boil some hot water. Just before baking slash tops of loaves and brush with cold water. Place in oven. On the bottom of the oven place a dish with 3 cups of boiling water to create a steamy atmosphere. Close oven and bake for 25 minutes or so.

Tips

Check loaves are done by tapping bottoms. They should sound hollow.

Different glazes will produce different effects – try milk, beaten egg or salt water.

You could try sprinkling your dough with chopped herbs, sesame seeds, poppy seeds, caraway, coriander, pumpkin seeds and so on. More elaborate finishes could include onion rings or grated cheese. If the bread is well colored, but still sounds dull, try placing back in oven for 10 minutes with heat turned off.

Yes, it is a complicated process, but most of the time you are free to do something else. One of the busiest surgeons I know bakes bread like this every week as a total relaxation, so if he has time what excuse have the rest of us got.
