Micro-loans to US poor from Bangladesh’s Grameen Bank

Sunday, February 17, 2008

Grameen Bank of Bangladesh has made the first loans to U.S. citizens who do not have a bank account. Grameen Bank is experienced in micro-financing in its home country, lending money to poor women that want to start small businesses.

Since the start of the mortgage-crisis more people in the U.S. tend to turn to fringe financial institutions bypassing the mainstream bank institutes. “Now is a good time because of … the subprime crisis and that highlights the issue that the financial system is not perfect,” , says the bank’s founder and 2006 Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus. Grameen Bank started in 1976 by lending a total amount of $27.00 to 42 Bangladesh women. To date the bank has made over $6.5 billion in loans to 7 million people in Bangladesh.

Grameen Bank’s first loans of approximately $50,000.00 in total in the U.S. was to a group of women in Jackson Heights, Queens, New York City. Garmeen Bank plans to offer $176 million in loans in New York City the next five years, and after that expanding into business as remittances and mortgages all over the U.S., as it has done in Bangladesh.

Emmanuel Macron wins French presidential election race

Tuesday, May 9, 2017

On Sunday, En Marche! candidate Emmanuel Macron won the second round of the 2017 French Presidential election, winning about 66.1 percent of the votes, defeating Front national’s Marine Le Pen with the final result declared yesterday. Winning the race with a significant vote difference, Marcon tweeted, “Everyone told us that it was impossible. But they did not know France!” ((fr))French language: ?Tout le monde nous disait que c’était impossible. Mais ils ne connaissaient pas la France !

With this victory, winning almost twice as many votes as Le Pen, 39-year-old Emmanuel Macron became the youngest President-elect of the Republic of France. In the first round of the election, held on April 23, no candidate won the absolute majority. The abstention rate increased from 22.23% to 25.44% in the second round, AFP reported, the first such second-round increase since 1969. He won the presidential race in the continuing state of emergency which was announced after the November 2015 Paris attack.

Known for her anti-European and anti-globalisation programme, far-right leader Le Pen managed to win about twice as many votes as her father and founder of the Front national party Jean-Marie Le Pen who lost to Jacques Chirac in 2002. Front national won the highest number of votes in their history.

In his speech in front of the glass pyramid near the Louvre Museum, Macron said, “I understand the divisions of our country that have led some to vote for extremists. I understand the anger, the anxiety, the doubts that a great part among us have also expressed.” ((fr))French language: ?Je sais les divisions de notre nation qui ont conduit certains à un vote extrême. Je sais les colères, les doutes, l’anxiété que certains ont exprimé. He also added, “I will defend France, its vital interests, its image, I promise you in front of you. I will defend Europe, our civilisation is at stake, our way of being free. I will work to re-establish the bonds between Europe and the citizens. I address to the nations of the world, the salvation of fraternal France.” Macron said he would serve as per the motto of France — Liberté, égalité, fraternité ((fr))French language: ?Liberty, equality and fraternity. Acknowledging the “immense” awaiting task, he said, “I will do everything I can in the coming five years to make sure you never have a reason to vote for extremism again”.

“Congratulations Emmanuel Macron! Let’s meet soon, and keep working to grow and strengthen the deep ties between Canada and France” ((fr))French language: ?Félicitations Emmanuel Macron! Rencontrons-nous rapidement et continuons à renforcer les liens de fraternité entre le Canada et la France, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau tweeted. German chancellor Angela Merkel congratulated Macron via a telephone call.

French parliamentary elections are to be held in June, and Emmanuel Macron, who describes himself as “neither left nor right” does not have a party in the parliament. En Marche! was formed last year. Marine Le Pen tweeted that Front national “must renew itself to live up to this historic opportunity and expectations of France” ((fr))French language: ?doit se renouveler pour être à la hauteur de cette opportunité historique et des attentes des Français.

Current president, François Hollande announced he would not run for re-election in December.

Works valued at €100 million stolen from the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris

Thursday, May 20, 2010

Five paintings, in total valued at almost €100 million. were stolen from the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris overnight on Wednesday. The works were Le pigeon aux petits pois by Pablo Picasso, La Pastorale by Henri Matisse, L’Olivier Près de l’Estaque by Georges Braque, La Femme a l’Eventail by Amedeo Modigliani and Nature Morte aux Chandeliers by Fernand Léger.

The museum itself has been closed and cordoned off by police investigating the theft. The thief is believed to have entered the museum by climbing through a window and the museum is investigating how the theft took place despite the presence of guards and a complex security system.

Christophe Girard, deputy mayor of Paris with responsibility for culture, told a press conference: “This is a serious crime to the heritage of humanity”, adding that the perpetrator or perpetrators were “obviously organised”. It is thought that the paintings are too well known to be easily sold and there has been speculation that they will be used as “currency” by criminal gangs, as opposed to having been “stolen for hire” on behalf of a collector.

An unnamed source told The Daily Telegraph: “It’s an enormous crime, one of the biggest in art history” while the mayor of Paris, Bertrand Delanoe, called the theft “an intolerable attack on Paris’s universal cultural heritage” and art historian Tim Marlow commented that the thief obviously “knew what he was taking”.

The theft was discovered at approximately 7a.m. local time (5a.m. UTC) by museum staff. The Paris prosecutor’s office said that a single masked man was captured on CCTV walking away with the works, which had been removed from their frames with care rather than being sliced out. The paintings belong to the museum’s permanent collection.

Investigators are questioning museum staff after speculation that the perpetrator may have had assistance from somebody on “the inside”. The investigation into the thefts is being led by the Brigade de Répression du Banditisme, an elite French police unit.

Employee Attitudes Are Contagious: How To Hire Employees Whose Attitudes Are Worth Catching

Employee attitudes are contagious!

In fact, employee attitude research reveals this truth. Research by Ronald Friedman, Ph.D., of University of Rochester, published in Motivation & Emotion journal found pairing people in a room with . . . (a) high-motivated people resulted in high motivation and work results, but (b) low-motivation people resulted in low motivation and lousy work results.

This gives you profitable reason to

* hire employees who ooze terrific work attitudes

* de-employ employees who exude lousy work attitudes

My pre-employment test research on successful employees reveals specific employee attitudes of superb, highly productive employees. Managers can use my research results to hire good employees whose attitudes are worth catching by their co-workers.

EMPLOYEE ATTITUDE RESEARCH USING PRE-EMPLOYMENT TESTS

Companies using my Abilities & Behavior Forecaster(tm) Tests, start by custom-tailoring the tests for each job in the company. Customizing is done by conducting benchmarking study, e.g., (a) testing best employees in each job and then (b) seeing typical or benchmark scores gotten by those best employees. Then, the company confidently can focus on hiring job applicants who get same test scores as its best employees.

Interestingly, in pre-employment test benchmarking studies I did at many companies for many jobs, I often find successful employees get high scores on six personality test scales. These test scores reveal terrific employee attitudes:

1. Teamwork

2. Follows Rules, Policies & Procedures

3. Poised/Objective Reaction to Pressure

4. Optimism

5. Being Fact-Focused

6. Helping People/Good Service Motivation

Isnt that amazing! Most companies best employees possess wonderful employee attitudes.

Their great employee attitudes result in them being productive workers who help their employers grow and prosper.

NO LINK BETWEEN INTELLIGENCE TEST SCORES & PERSONALITY TEST SCORES

Companies using pre-employment test sometimes ask me if smarter employees are better employees. Answer: It depends.

Think of job applicant assessments like you would when you decide whether to use a ladder. Before you step on a ladder, you examine its two legs.

* If both legs are strong, you use the ladder

* If one or both legs are broken, you would not use the ladder

Similarly, you also must evaluate job applicants on two key ingredients using

1. Behavior or Personality Tests

2. Intelligence, Mental or Cognitive Abilities Tests

My research shows the best employees in some jobs get high intelligence tests scores. For other jobs, the best employees get average or low intelligence test scores. It depends on the intelligence or cognitive ability needed to perform the job.

As such, job applicant assessments should include both personality or behavior tests plus relevant intelligence tests.

JOB INTERVIEW BEHAVIOR YOU SHOULD OBSERVE

Most interviewers, according to research, are lousy at using job interview to predict if a job applicant will succeed or fail on-the-job. That is important reason many companies use pre-employment tests. Pre-hire tests prove vastly more accurate at predicting work success or failure.

But, here is something you can observe in job interviews. In my third book, Hire the Best & Avoid the Rest(tm), the most quoted sentence I wrote said: Whatever behavior you see from the applicant during your screening process is likely to be the very best behavior you ever will see from that person.

So, if a job applicant shows good behaviors in job interviews, they are best you ever will see. If an applicant shows lousy behaviors in interview, then you could expect lousy employee attitudes if you hire that person.

SUMMARY ON HOW YOU CAN HIRE PEOPLE WITH GOOD EMPLOYEE ATTITUDES

Since employee attitudes are contagious, make sure you hire job applicants whose attitudes are worth catching by co-workers.

Start with pre-employment tests. Customize personality tests and intelligence or cognitive ability tests by finding benchmark test scores of your companys best employees.

Then, focus on considering job applicants who get same scores as your best employees on pre-employment tests. Also, remember my research showing personality test scores of terrific employees reveal wonderful employee attitudes on six test scales: Teamwork, Follows Rules, Poised Reaction to Pressure, Optimism, Fact-Focus, and Helping People/Good Service Motivation.

Also, in job interviews remember that what you see from a job applicant is the best behavior you ever will see from that person. So, be aware and beware!

Your pre-employment tests and job interview observations can help you hire employees who exude good employee attitudes.

Media round-up: April Fools’ Day 2008

Tuesday, April 1, 2008

Many media outlets traditionally deliberately spread hoaxes on April Fools’ Day, including notable quality sources such as National Geographic and Science.

The popular British tabloid The Sun wrote that French President Nicolas Sarkozy is to undergo stretch surgery to make him taller than his wife, Italian artist and model Carla Bruni. The report claimed the 5 foot 5 inch leader would be made 5 inches taller in one year using a method by Israeli professor Ura Schmuck. The Sun noted that during his visit to Britain last week, Sarkozy had high-heel shoes while his wife wore a pair of flat pumps.

The Guardian on the other hand ran an article that suggested that Carla would head an initiative by Prime Minister Gordon Brown to bring more glamour, good taste and sophistication to the U.K. general population. This would involve collaboration with Marks & Spencer for high-street fashion and Jamie Oliver for meals and wine.

BBC News had real-looking footage of flying penguins fronted by documentary host Terry Jones, which were actually an advertisement for its new iPlayer.

Cleveland, Ohio clinic performs US’s first face transplant

Thursday, December 18, 2008

A team of eight transplant surgeons in Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, USA, led by reconstructive surgeon Dr. Maria Siemionow, age 58, have successfully performed the first almost total face transplant in the US, and the fourth globally, on a woman so horribly disfigured due to trauma, that cost her an eye. Two weeks ago Dr. Siemionow, in a 23-hour marathon surgery, replaced 80 percent of her face, by transplanting or grafting bone, nerve, blood vessels, muscles and skin harvested from a female donor’s cadaver.

The Clinic surgeons, in Wednesday’s news conference, described the details of the transplant but upon request, the team did not publish her name, age and cause of injury nor the donor’s identity. The patient’s family desired the reason for her transplant to remain confidential. The Los Angeles Times reported that the patient “had no upper jaw, nose, cheeks or lower eyelids and was unable to eat, talk, smile, smell or breathe on her own.” The clinic’s dermatology and plastic surgery chair, Francis Papay, described the nine hours phase of the procedure: “We transferred the skin, all the facial muscles in the upper face and mid-face, the upper lip, all of the nose, most of the sinuses around the nose, the upper jaw including the teeth, the facial nerve.” Thereafter, another team spent three hours sewing the woman’s blood vessels to that of the donor’s face to restore blood circulation, making the graft a success.

The New York Times reported that “three partial face transplants have been performed since 2005, two in France and one in China, all using facial tissue from a dead donor with permission from their families.” “Only the forehead, upper eyelids, lower lip, lower teeth and jaw are hers, the rest of her face comes from a cadaver; she could not eat on her own or breathe without a hole in her windpipe. About 77 square inches of tissue were transplanted from the donor,” it further described the details of the medical marvel. The patient, however, must take lifetime immunosuppressive drugs, also called antirejection drugs, which do not guarantee success. The transplant team said that in case of failure, it would replace the part with a skin graft taken from her own body.

Dr. Bohdan Pomahac, a Brigham and Women’s Hospital surgeon praised the recent medical development. “There are patients who can benefit tremendously from this. It’s great that it happened,” he said.

Leading bioethicist Arthur Caplan of the University of Pennsylvania withheld judgment on the Cleveland transplant amid grave concerns on the post-operation results. “The biggest ethical problem is dealing with failure — if your face rejects. It would be a living hell. If your face is falling off and you can’t eat and you can’t breathe and you’re suffering in a terrible manner that can’t be reversed, you need to put on the table assistance in dying. There are patients who can benefit tremendously from this. It’s great that it happened,” he said.

Dr Alex Clarke, of the Royal Free Hospital had praised the Clinic for its contribution to medicine. “It is a real step forward for people who have severe disfigurement and this operation has been done by a team who have really prepared and worked towards this for a number of years. These transplants have proven that the technical difficulties can be overcome and psychologically the patients are doing well. They have all have reacted positively and have begun to do things they were not able to before. All the things people thought were barriers to this kind of operations have been overcome,” she said.

The first partial face transplant surgery on a living human was performed on Isabelle Dinoire on November 27 2005, when she was 38, by Professor Bernard Devauchelle, assisted by Professor Jean-Michel Dubernard in Amiens, France. Her Labrador dog mauled her in May 2005. A triangle of face tissue including the nose and mouth was taken from a brain-dead female donor and grafted onto the patient. Scientists elsewhere have performed scalp and ear transplants. However, the claim is the first for a mouth and nose transplant. Experts say the mouth and nose are the most difficult parts of the face to transplant.

In 2004, the same Cleveland Clinic, became the first institution to approve this surgery and test it on cadavers. In October 2006, surgeon Peter Butler at London‘s Royal Free Hospital in the UK was given permission by the NHS ethics board to carry out a full face transplant. His team will select four adult patients (children cannot be selected due to concerns over consent), with operations being carried out at six month intervals. In March 2008, the treatment of 30-year-old neurofibromatosis victim Pascal Coler of France ended after having received what his doctors call the worlds first successful full face transplant.

Ethical concerns, psychological impact, problems relating to immunosuppression and consequences of technical failure have prevented teams from performing face transplant operations in the past, even though it has been technically possible to carry out such procedures for years.

Mr Iain Hutchison, of Barts and the London Hospital, warned of several problems with face transplants, such as blood vessels in the donated tissue clotting and immunosuppressants failing or increasing the patient’s risk of cancer. He also pointed out ethical issues with the fact that the procedure requires a “beating heart donor”. The transplant is carried out while the donor is brain dead, but still alive by use of a ventilator.

According to Stephen Wigmore, chair of British Transplantation Society’s ethics committee, it is unknown to what extent facial expressions will function in the long term. He said that it is not certain whether a patient could be left worse off in the case of a face transplant failing.

Mr Michael Earley, a member of the Royal College of Surgeon‘s facial transplantation working party, commented that if successful, the transplant would be “a major breakthrough in facial reconstruction” and “a major step forward for the facially disfigured.”

In Wednesday’s conference, Siemionow said “we know that there are so many patients there in their homes where they are hiding from society because they are afraid to walk to the grocery stores, they are afraid to go the the street.” “Our patient was called names and was humiliated. We very much hope that for this very special group of patients there is a hope that someday they will be able to go comfortably from their houses and enjoy the things we take for granted,” she added.

In response to the medical breakthrough, a British medical group led by Royal Free Hospital’s lead surgeon Dr Peter Butler, said they will finish the world’s first full face transplant within a year. “We hope to make an announcement about a full-face operation in the next 12 months. This latest operation shows how facial transplantation can help a particular group of the most severely facially injured people. These are people who would otherwise live a terrible twilight life, shut away from public gaze,” he said.

Roll Your Own Cigarettes

Roll your own cigarette options allow for consumers to purchase an apparatus, cigarette wraps, and Tobacco, and create their own packs for a fraction of the cost of buying them in stores.

Options

There are three options that can be considered when rolling your own cigarettes, including a manual injector, electric table injector, or the option to join a club and roll your own cigarettes on site. Each of these has their own benefits. The manual injector option allows you to manually roll your own cigarettes. It takes about an hour and a half to complete a carton’s worth. This is the more economical choice. The electric injector option is a bit faster than the manual option. Using a similar apparatus, you can likely roll a carton of cigarettes in about a half hour. For faster results, however, going to the nearest location and rolling your cigarettes on the spot is the best option.

FDA says Coca-Cola’s Diet Coke Plus is misbranded

Thursday, December 25, 2008

The US Food and Drug Administration has written a warning letter to The Coca-Cola Company that Diet Coke Plus violates the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act‘s guidelines. The December 10 letter, signed by Roberta Wagner, director of the office of compliance at the Center of Food Safety and Applied Nutrition, says Coca-Cola should “take prompt action to correct these violations.”

The product’s label describes the drink as “Diet Coke with Vitamins and Minerals.” FDA said the soft drink does not have enough nutrients to justify the use of the word “plus” in its trade name. According to statute, foods must contain at least 10 per cent more of the Reference Daily Intake (RDI) or Daily Reference Value (DRV) for a given nutrient “than an appropriate reference food” in order to be called “plus” legally.

The FDA also advised “it is inappropriate to add extra nutrients to snack foods such as carbonated beverages.” The FDA warns Coca-Cola and asks it to revise the drink’s labeling and inform the agency of its reply regarding how it plans to fix the violation, within 15 days of receiving the warning. Coca-Cola says it will submit a reply to the FDA in early January, but currently has no plans to alter the label.

The US Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FFDCA, FDCA, or FD&C), is a set of laws passed by Congress in 1938 giving authority to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to oversee the safety of food, drugs, and cosmetics. A principal author of this law was Royal S. Copeland, a three-term U.S. Senator from New York, whose concerns about drug safety stemmed from the fact that he was also a homeopathic physician. The act has been amended many times, most recently to add requirements about bioterrorism preparations.

The Coca-Cola Company issued a statement saying, “This does not involve any health or safety issues, and we believe the label on Diet Coke Plus complies with FDA’s policies and regulations.”

The Coca-Cola Company is the world’s largest beverage company, largest manufacturer, distributor and marketer of non-alcoholic beverage concentrates and syrups in the world, and one of the largest corporations in the United States. The company is best known for its flagship product Coca-Cola, invented by pharmacist John Stith Pemberton in 1886. Diet Coke Plus (also known as Coca Cola Light Plus) was released in the United Kingdom in October 2007.

Forbes has reported that “Coca-Cola has been on a crusade to revamp its image from a purveyor of highly sweetened, fattening products to a more family-friendly image of low-calorie, nutritional drinks. Its violation of the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act could mean hefty fines and a seizure of product from the pop king, but often these sorts of issues are resolved without incident.”
