Al Sharpton speaks out on race, rights and what bothers him about his critics

Monday, December 3, 2007

At Thanksgiving dinner David Shankbone told his white middle class family that he was to interview Reverend Al Sharpton that Saturday. The announcement caused an impassioned discussion about the civil rights leader’s work, the problems facing the black community and whether Sharpton helps or hurts his cause. Opinion was divided. “He’s an opportunist.” “He only stirs things up.” “Why do I always see his face when there’s a problem?”

Shankbone went to the National Action Network’s headquarters in Harlem with this Thanksgiving discussion to inform the conversation. Below is his interview with Al Sharpton on everything from Tawana Brawley, his purported feud with Barack Obama, criticism by influential African Americans such as Clarence Page, his experience running for President, to how he never expected he would see fifty (he is now 53). “People would say to me, ‘Now that I hear you, even if I disagree with you I don’t think you’re as bad as I thought,'” said Sharpton. “I would say, ‘Let me ask you a question: what was “bad as you thought”?’ And they couldn’t say. They don’t know why they think you’re bad, they just know you’re supposed to be bad because the right wing tells them you’re bad.”

NASA prepares to launch mission to nearby asteroids

Wednesday, September 19, 2007

NASA is beginning the final preparations for next Wednesday’s launch of the Dawn probe, aboard a Delta II rocket. The Dawn probe, costing over US$250 million, will visit the dwarf planet Ceres and the asteroid Vesta. The launch was originally planned for mid-June, however due to a damaged crate, shipping delays, and a damaged solar panel, NASA chose to delay it until now. Last week the spacecraft was delivered to the launch pad, and engineers performed tests to ensure that it is ready for launch. Today, the payload fairings were installed, and the probe is ready for its launch next week onto its 5 billion kilometer (3.2 billion mile) mission.

As the Delta II launches, three stages of rockets will propel the probe towards its first target. With the help of ion thrusters, it will reach Mars in mid-2009. Using Mars’ gravity, the probe will speed up and proceed towards the first asteroid, Vesta, in late 2011. After orbiting for seven months, it will leave Vesta in mid-2012, and arrive at Ceres in 2015. After making scans of Ceres, it will enter an orbit around Ceres that will ensure that it does not impact the asteroid for half a century. This is required due to the United Nations’ “Outer Space Treaty”, which states that “harmful contamination” of these asteroids must be avoided.

The targets of this mission, Ceres and Vesta, couldn’t be less alike. Ceres (diameter 975 km, 600 miles) is larger than Vesta (578 km, 350 miles). This makes Ceres approximately the size of Texas. NASA believes Ceres could contain water beneath its outer crust because, like Earth, its inner layers are heavier than the outer layers, and Ceres’ outer layer is lighter than water. Vesta, on the other hand, is the size of Arizona, and has a surface of volcanic rock, which astronomers believe came from its hot inner layers. Vesta also has a large crater – almost 500 km (300 miles) across – on its southern pole. The collision that caused this likely blasted enough rock into space to fill a container 160 by 160 by 80 km (100 by 100 by 50 miles).

The probe will make several observations of these asteroids: it will compare the makeup, shape, size, and densities, analyze craters, and determine mass, gravity, rotation. To determine the makeup, the probe carries a mapping spectrometer, and tools to map emissions of neutrons and gamma rays. Using this information, NASA can compare the formation of these bodies to learn more about our solar system, for example, to test a theory which states that a number of stony meteorites may be debris from Vesta.

There’s one more piece of equipment aboard the probe: A small silicon chip containing the names of 350,000 people who submitted their names to the “Send Your Name to the Asteroid Belt” campaign. After next week’s launch, the spacecraft will deploy its solar panels and undergo two months of testing before it begins the cruise to Mars.

What One Learns In First Aid Classes?

By Johny Harley

There are countless emergency situations that occur all over the world on a daily basis. Some emergency situations require first aid assistance, while other cases are serious and require further medical assistance from trained health care providers in order save lives. However, first aid is beneficial and valuable in both instances.

First aid assistance is most needed in cases, where there are no health care professionals and/or medical equipment available. First aid can be performed with little to no equipment and/or tools. There are countless reasons, why everyone should attend first aid classes even if they have no intention of ever entering the health care profession. The most obvious reason being that one can never know when the skills learned in a first aid class can help save someone’s life.

One does not need any kind of education or skills to attend first aid classes in Los Angeles, or anywhere else for that matter. The skills taught during the classes are lifelong and priceless and can be used at any time when needed. In fact, there are some professions where first aid training is extremely important. Such professionals include firemen and policemen. But, even people who are not tasked with protecting people, but serving them can benefit from attending these classes. Such professionals include nannies, airplane crews, teachers, au pairs, and others.

If you like to attend first aid classes in Los Angeles, then you can search for an instructor on the internet. But, in order to find a properly certified instructor one should inquire at a local hospital, health care clinic, police station or fire department. Most of them directly offer first aid classes and certifications. In order to get the most from the classes, it is best to learn from highly skilled and experienced first aid providers. One does not want to receive poor training; otherwise one could seriously hurt or injure someone when trying to assist them. First aid instructors have to receive special certifications in order to teach others. Those who attend all the classes and complete their training will receive relevant certifications.

First aid classes in Los Angeles will consist of two parts; the theoretical and then the practical training that consists of simulated examples. A few things that will be taught in the class include;

— One will learn simple skills such as applying a bandage.

— One will also be taught, how to determine what injuries the person is experiencing and then how to treat them while waiting for medical assistance, if necessary.

— Students are taught important skills such as providing cardiopulmonary resuscitation. This is one of the most important skills because doing it incorrectly could further harm the person.

— Other basic skills such as putting pressure on a wound to stop the flow of blood.

— Students are taught to treat a wide variety of wounds and injuries such as fractures, sprains and burns.

— In case of broken bones, people are taught how to apply splints to different parts such as hands, arms and legs.

When looking for first aid classes in Los Angeles, one can find entities that provide free classes. But, those that do charge for the courses do not charge unreasonable amounts. All organizations teach the same material. So it does not matter where one attends classes at. However, it is important to make sure that the organizations have the necessary certifications, which is more than just receiving first aid training.

Those who have successfully attended all first aid classes in Los Angeles will receive certificates to show that they are qualified to provide first aid assistance to sick and injured people.

Eric Bogosian on writing and the creative urge

Thursday, April 17, 2008

Eric Bogosian is one of America’s great multi-dimensional talents. “There’s sort of three different careers, and any one of them could exist by itself, on its own two feet. There was that solo stuff, and then I started writing plays in the late seventies.” Although his work has spanned genres, most readers will recognize Bogosian for his acting, which has included a memorable performance in Woody Allen‘s Deconstructing Harry to co-writing and starring in the Oliver Stone movie Talk Radio (based upon his Pulitzer Prize-nominated play) to playing the bad guy in Under Siege 2 to his current role in Law & Order: Criminal Intent as Captain Danny Ross. They may not know, however, that he had collaborated with Frank Zappa on a album, worked with Sonic Youth, and was a voice on Mike Judge‘s Beavis & Butthead Do America. He started one of New York City’s largest dance companies, The Kitchen, which is still in existence. He starred alongside Val Kilmer in Wonderland and his play Talk Radio was recently revived on Broadway with Liev Schreiber in the role Bogosian wrote and made famous.

Currently at work on his third novel, tentatively titled The Artist, Bogosian spoke with David Shankbone about the craft of writing and his life as a creative.

Wikinews interviews Steve Burke, U.S. Democratic Party presidential candidate

Sunday, December 13, 2015

This article is a featured article. It is considered one of the best works of the Wikinews community. See Wikinews:Featured articles for more information.

Macomb, New York Councilman Steve Burke took some time to speak with Wikinews about his campaign for the U.S. Democratic Party’s 2016 presidential nomination.

Burke, an insurance adjuster and farmer, was elected councilman in Brookhaven, New York in 1979. He left the town after being accused and found not guilty of bribery in the 1980s. Since 1987 he has served as Macomb councilman off-and-on and currently holds the post. From 1993 to 1996 and 1999 to 2002 he worked as chairman of the Democratic Party of St. Lawrence County, New York. Among his many political campaigns, Burke unsuccessfully sought the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination in 1992 and recently attempted to run for U.S. Congress in 2014 but too many of his ballot petition signatures were found invalid. Burke filed with the Federal Election Commission to run for president in the 2016 election on September 18, 2015 and has qualified for the first-in-the-nation New Hampshire Primary.

With Wikinews reporter William S. Saturn?, Burke discusses his political background, his 2016 presidential campaign, and his policy proposals.
