20 injured in Montreal college shooting spree

Wednesday, September 13, 2006

At 12:41 p.m. local time (UTC-5), a man opened fire at Dawson College, in Westmount, Quebec, Canada; the college is located near the heart of downtown Montreal. Police report at least 20 people being injured. The gunman was reportedly killed at the scene by police. Students told reporters that they heard several shots in the building at about 12:45 local time. One student told a local radio station that she saw two people who had been shot, including one who was hit at the neck. The student said a friend told her four people had been shot.

Hundreds of students fled the building, and the area has been cordoned off. Nearby Plaza Alexis Nihon and Westmount Square were evacuated and the Green line of the Montreal Metro was shut down between Lionel-Groulx and Peel. Police officers wearing bullet-proof vests are keeping people away from the college. “They’re telling me, ‘Go the other way, lady, you’re in the line of fire,'” said CBC News reporter Nancy Wood, who reported from the scene.

Local media have reported police hotlines have been established for loved ones to gain more information: +1-(514)-280-2880, +1-(514)-280-2805, and +1-(514)-280-2806. The Montreal General Hospital has also set up a hotline at +1-(514)-843-2839.

Police have reported that the situation has been neutralized as of 20:06, September 13, 2006 (UTC). Police have been told to stand down and are no longer looking for new victims or shooters.

Dawson College is a CEGEP that hosts about 10,000 students.

Wikinews interviews Oceania Paralympic Committee President Paul Bird

Thursday, August 30, 2012

London, England — When Wikinews interviewed Oceania Paralympic Committee (OPC) President Paul Bird, the day before the start of this year’s Summer Paralympics, he shared the idea that whilst Oceania may not be the first place one thinks of in connection with “Paralympics” or even “developing countries”, Oceania is represented at the Games in London by athletes who have overcome many obstacles in order to compete.

According to Bird, two athletes from Oceania are regarded as medal prospects. One, Fijian high-jumper Iliesa Delana, missed out in Beijing due to his event being cancelled. He is currently ranked number two in the world, having won silver at the World Championships. The other is Francis Kompaon, a sprinter from Rabaul in Papua-New Guinea competing in the 100 and 200 metre sprints. These athletes qualified under the standard Paralympic processes. Other Oceania athletes are “wildcards”, selected by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) to broaden the number of nations taking part. Countries do not always get their preferred choices of wildcards; for a variety of reasons, the IPC may select a less-favoured athlete. In particular, women are more likely to be chosen to address the games’ gender imbalance.

It’s not easy being an athlete, or an official, from a developing country says Bird. Often people are confronted with a host of unfamiliar situations. For example: many of the required forms are now online; officials with little technology experience have to navigate an unfamiliar landscape of browsers, buttons and passwords.

The OPC consists of eight countries: Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Samoa, Tonga, Vanuatu, the Solomon Islands, and Papua-New Guinea. Papua-New Guinea and Samoa are sending two athletes each to the London Games. Fiji, Tonga, Vanuatu, and the Solomon Islands are sending one each.

Bird says, in attempting to promote Paralympic sport in Oceania, the region’s Paralympic Committee puts a priority on training local officials, coaches and classifiers. This helps member countries conduct their own events, without assistance from Australia and New Zealand. Additionally, the Committee organizes the Arafura Games, a regional competition.

Countries in the region are encouraged by the OPC to assemble teams, get athletes into work rankings, and plan ahead for the 2016 Paralympics to be held in Rio. Efforts are being made to strengthened ties between the region and international bodies such as the International Tennis Federation.

Bird, as head of the OPC, has been a member of the Australian Paralympic Committee since 1993. He won gold and silver medals in swimming at the 1984 Paralympics where he was the Australian Team Captain. He was the Australian Chef de Mission in Sydney in 2000 and Athens in 2004, and the Assistant Chef de Mission in Barcelona in 1992, Atlanta in 1996, and Beijing in 2008. He also currently sits on the Australian Paralympic Committee’s board.

A Variety Of Dumpster Ct Sizes For Recycling

byAlma Abell

Recycling is not only environmentally responsible but it is alsoregulated for several businesses. Oversight agencies for the automotive, manufacturing, industrial, and construction industries, among others can be fined for not complying with guidelines and regulations. Companies can decide to take control of those processes in-house or have recycling and debris removal businesses handle all the aspects of recycling.

Experienced recycling and removal companies will provide a variety of sizes and types of containers or a Dumpster CT to hold scrap metals. Containers can be driven to the facility when full, unloaded, and driven back out with no hassle or fuss. The metals are sorted and the business is paid current prices for each type of metal. Staff can assist in selecting a container that will be ideal for the needs.

Equipment and Containers

Load-lugger containers are available in ten, twelve, and fifteen-yard sizes. Roll-off containers are offered in twelve, twenty, thirty, and forty-yard sizes. For smaller amounts of scrap metal, a Dumpster in CT can be provided. There are dumper trailers, over-the-road van trailers, self-dumping containers, drums, stack-able containers, and boxes and pallets. The stack-able containers are perfect for apartment complexes, individual homes, or small businesses.

Some companies, like Calamari Recycling Co Inc, for example, have the experience and capacity to custom design solutions for unique recycling and removal needs. Their equipment includes forklifts, cranes for heavy-duty machinery, and cutting tools for larger items like metal boats, Quonset huts, and sheds. Demolition companies, government entities, and municipalities will often work with recycling and removal companies to solve problems.

Companies and small businesses without the staff or capacity to drive large container vehicles have the option of contracting with the company to provide removal services. The containers will be left at the location. When full, the owner simply has to call the facility and be placed on the schedule for container pick-up. The nominal fees will be deducted from the total amount owed for the scrap metal.

Pricing

Different metals are paid out based on the current highest prices. Pricing fluctuates based on supply and demand, the value of the metal, and the grade of the pieces. Brass, for example, earns customers the highest price levels at over one dollar per pound, as of . Other metals are worth much less than a dollar per pound. Study raises health concerns about shower curtains

Monday, June 16, 2008

The Canadian Environmental Law Assocation and the Canadian organization Environmental Defence jointly conducted a study that was released to the public on Thursday, saying that chemicals released by new vinyl curtains may pose a significant health risk.

The study noted that many shower curtains contain more than 100 volatile organic compounds (VOCs), phthalates and organotins, some of which may be released into the air when first taken from a package. These chemicals, responsible for the characteristic smell of new vinyl, may cause damage to kidneys, the liver and the central nervous systems, respiratory problems, nausea, headaches and loss off coordination, according to the report.

These vinyl curtains are also said to contain traces of metals like lead, cadmium and mercury.

Jennifer Foulds of Environmental Defence advises consumers to seek alternatives to new vinyl products such as shower curtains and table cloths. Older products are thought to be safe, as they have already released most of the allegedly dangerous chemicals.

Critics of the study have called it “fear-mongering”, and some health professionals agree that the risk is being overblown. Warren Foster, a professor in the obstetrics and gynecology department at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario points out that, “the difference between hazard and risk is great, and without knowing the actual human exposure, it’s premature to make any judgement.”

Foster further commented that the study was not performed in a rigorous manner by not having controls or random sampling.

Five brands of shower curtain were examined in the study; they were purchased from American stores including Bed Bath & Beyond, Kmart, Sears, Target and Wal-Mart. Curtains of the same brand are also available in major Canadian stores.

Marion Axmith, director general of the Vinyl Council of Canada calls the report a “blatant attempt to manipulate consumers and retailers into thinking shower curtains pose a danger, and they don’t.” She noted that, “as far as we know, nobody’s ever been harmed by a shower curtain.”

Vinyl has long been a point of dispute between environmentalists and those in the chemical industry. A chemical used to make vinyl is known to be a risk for liver and other cancers for chemical plant workers, and the phthalates in vinyl products have been linked to interference with normal male hormone production.

US President Obama celebrates his first Martin Luther King Jr. Day while in office

Tuesday, January 19, 2010

On Sunday, at a Bapist church originally founded by freed slaves, US President Barack Obama addressed the congregation about the “Dream” of slain civil rights activist Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.—whom Obama credits with paving the way for his 2008 election—and about the importance of hope and faith in his own life.

On Monday, Obama, with his family in tow, served hot lunches at a local Washington soup kitchen—one of several ways America’s first black president planned to pay tribute to the late Dr. King on the federal holiday that honors his legacy and lasting impact upon society.

Later at the White House, Obama will host a gathering consisting of small selected group of African-American seniors and their grandchildren where they will discuss the meaning of the civil rights movement and how it still effects them to this day. Following which, that evening, the Obamas are slated to attend the “Let Freedom Ring” concert at the Kennedy Center. A musical event that will feature gospel artists and choir members from various area churches among other houses of worship.

Another prominent American politician, governor-elect of New Jersey, Chris Christie held a banquet on Monday evening to honor the importance of Dr. King’s message as well. Other commemorations included a march in Seattle where participants rallied for issues in the African-American community.

Natural And Healthy Beauty Of Nopalea

Submitted by: Frank Yaconis

Natural and Healthy Beauty of Nopalea

The Nopalea Cactus has been revered not only for its natural beauty, bringing brilliant reds, and purples to the desert landscape when it blossoms, but also for its special healing properties.

Nurtured under the hot sun for centuries, the Nopalea Cactus, most commonly known as the Prickly Pear Cactus, has grown rampant in the Sonoran desert for hundreds of years. During that time, native people in South and Central America have turned to the plant for its use as a food and a medicine.

The plant cannot only be eaten as a vegetable (people chop its pads, take out the spines and cook it like any other vegetable), but it can also be made into a healthful juice.

In its most primitive form, the Prickly Pear Cactus juice is green and a bit thick and slimy and most natives prefer it that way. But for those of us who have not acquired a taste for the Prickly Pear Cactus in its natural state, we can still reap its health benefits by drinking Nopalea Juice.

Nopalea Juice is made primarily of water and the cactus, but then is natural sweetened with agave nectar. In addition, it becomes even more healthy because more than a dozen fruit extracts and concentrates are added making the juice chock full of vitamins and minerals.

However, before anything at all is added to the juice, it already has healthful properties. That is because in its natural state, the Prickly Pear Cactus is a natural antioxidant and natural anti-inflammatory.

So, Nopalea Juice is bringing all these benefits into your body in an all-natural delivery system of the tasty juice.

While the plant is delicious and healthy to eat, it is also wonderful to look at.

The lovely cactus is beauty itself. The gorgeous flowers bloom in the richest purples and reds, which are offset by the luscious green of the plant itself. These rich colors contain powerful antioxidants.

The pigment that makes the cactus so vibrant is also a natural class of antioxidants called betalains. They super power antioxidants clean and fortify our body s cells. Betalains are contained in few other foods, including Swiss chard and beets. But it is believed that the highest concentration of betalains is found in the Prickly Pear Cactus.

Along with antioxidants, the natural anti-inflammatory properties of the plant are becoming increasingly important as scientists make stronger links between chronic inflammations and a host and variety of serious illness and disease.

The combination of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties means that drinking the juice not only helps keep your body healthy right now, but also may help your body stave off future disease and illness.

For a long time the plant only grew in the desert of South and Central America, but Spanish explorers immediately recognized its value and brought cuttings back to Europe with them.

Now the plant is grown and harvested around the world.

The easiest way to reap the benefits of the Prickly Pear Cactus is by drinking Nopalea Juice.

About the Author: Frank Yocanis has been researching and writing about

Chronic Inflammation

for the past decade. He has even traveled to the Sonoran desert half a dozen times to study how Nopalea contains amazing properties that help with all kinds of joint pain, including

leg swelling

. He is excited to share how this antioxidant-rich drink can change your life.

Photoessay: The Idiotarod: When Good Shopping Carts Go Bad

Wednesday, March 15, 2006

Washington, D.C. —When you mix a shopping cart, six team members, bar hopping and bonus points for schmoozing bar hostesses and sabotaging your enemies, you get the annual Washington, D.C. Idiotarod race. On Saturday, this bizarre fund raising event, which originated in San Francisco 13 years ago, pitted teams of “sleds” together to race from bar to bar in Washington, D.C.’s fashionable Dupont Circle and Adams Morgan neighborhoods. Each “sled” consists of a “borrowed” shopping cart and six human dogs to pull the cart. Points are given for originality, the best time and best sabotage of another sled.

The race is held to benefit the Arlington Food Assistance Center and is organized by Ellen Shortill and Kristen Heatherly. Their organization, called “SMASHED” or “Society for Mature Adults Seeking to Help, Entertain and Donate”, takes the position that donating small amounts many times ultimately benefits the smaller charities. Said Shortill, “Our goal is simply to have fun and raise money for those charities that don’t really get any attention.”

The race this year consisted of 22 teams. Although team “Save NOLA” got to the last bar first, teams can win bonus points for (among other things) flirting with bar hosts and hostesses at any of the five bars along the route. The route is approximately 3 miles long, and each team is required to spend at least 20 minutes in each bar. Heatherly noted that “it doesn’t matter who got here first, ultimately its the team with the most credits and the best time that wins.”

Unique among the participants are brothers Pete and Chris Magnuson who are attempting to get on the 10th edition of Amazing Race on CBS. Their team called “Pick Pete and Chris” ran through the streets with t-shirts hawking their website and their fervent desire to be chosen for the next edition of the television show.

“Its not really about who wins, its that we get to have a blast and raise some money,” said Shortill. The charity event raised about $500 and various canned goods for the food pantry.
